Training At Home. Sporty man doing yoga

In recent months, the media have paid more attention to our profession. There are solidly documented articles, like in Le Monde , or the article in Society or even the nice video on Joseph Pilates published on the networks by France Culture . It is a sign that the specific identity that distinguishes our profession is starting to take shape in the collective consciousness. And that is rewarding for us teachers.

The article in Le Monde of November 16, 2020, shed light on the legend according to which the practice of the exercises taught by Joseph Pilates to the detainees interned in the camp on the Isle of Man would have immunized them against the Spanish Flu. The article demonstrates in a studied way by quoting authorities on the subject, such as Javier Perez Pont, author of "Hubertus Joseph Pilates: The Biography" that the low number of patients and deaths on the Isle of Man is more attributable to geographic and logistical factors as well as sports. This thesis is perhaps very correct but it is, in our opinion, insufficient and incomplete.

At this moment the question of immunity takes center stage in the media. The message is now clear: a healthy physical and mental life will defend us against inflammatory pathogens. But how does this immune boost work?

The major factor that contributes to the body's ability to protect itself against invading viral or bacterial pathogens is the production and circulation of lymph. Lymph nodes are organs that produce lymphocytes and filter lymph - toxins, cellular waste and infectious agents are removed. The Lymph cleanses the body, it leaves the blood network to soak the tissues before joining its own vessels and being returned to the blood. It moves around the body through the actions of skeletal muscles and smooth muscles in cooperation with the cardiovascular system. The only motor or pump to stimulate the movement of Lymph in the body is this combined action of deep muscles and breathing.

The main organs that produce lymphocytes are found in the thorax and trunk. These deep zones are mobilized by the practice of the Pilates method.
